I often receive bits and pieces of leadership wisdom from various folks I have met over the years and it humbles me every time I get these emails filled with leadership wisdom. I am humbled because I am thankful that someone took the time to send me a little bit of wisdom to help me become a better person, leader and manager. So I thought I should share these bits of wisdom with you and maybe they will help you as they have helped me become a better leader.
When we think of leadership we often forget that being a good leader is just one part of the whole. Leadership and management work hand in hand. We manage our workload, we manage our employees, we manage our homes, and the list goes on and on. Dr. Henry Minztberg once stated: “Instead of distinguishing leaders from managers, we should encourage all managers to be leaders. And we should define “leadership” as management practiced well.”
My view of leadership follows this line of thought, no one is born a leader. It takes practice, knowledge, self-motivation and dedication to become a good leader. You have to work for it. You have to work hard to gain the skills, the knowledge and the abilities to be a good leader. It is not easy and many struggle to achieve it….. But, if you want it, if you believe it, If You work for it, you can and will gain the skills, characteristics, drive, goals and vision that will make you a great leader.
As you begin each day, take a moment and reflect on what you want to accomplish. Take the time to put into perspective all that you have before you. Take the time to be thankful for what you have in your life and most importantly take time to dream. Dream big and put your ideas, thoughts and plans into action. Action is what makes you successful and you should WORK FOR IT each day.
With that in mind, I leave you with two quotes that I have posted in my office and use as a reminder of what I can accomplish if I only…. Work for It.
“There is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself.” Miyamoto Musashi
“You never fail until you stop trying.” Albert Einstein
